Assoc. Prof. Ali DURMUŞ was born in the Fevzipaşa district of İslahiye, Gaziantep. Due to his father’s tenure at the State Monopoly (Tekel), he commenced his primary education at Malatya Derme Primary School and completed it at Adıyaman Atatürk Primary School. Following his father’s appointment to the Taşova district of Amasya, he attended Taşova Atatürk Middle School. He later graduated from Gaziantep Kilis High School, ranking 3rd in his class.
As his uncle resided in Çanakkale, he initially pursued his university education at the Çanakkale Education Institute. Upon qualifying as a teacher, Assoc. Prof. Ali Durmuş was appointed to the Yukarı Tutak village in the Diyadin district of Ağrı as part of his compulsory service. After serving as an educator for one term, he retook the university entrance exams to pursue a career in medicine.
He successfully earned a place at the Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine, which was one of only two medical schools offering English-language education at the time. He completed his one-year English preparatory program and six years of medical education without interruption. During his university years, he was an active member of the ski and basketball teams and took on leadership roles in social organizations, including the coordination of the annual Medical Ball.
For his compulsory medical service, he was appointed to İskenderun State Hospital, where he served as the Head of the Emergency Department. Following the Medical Specialty Exam (TUS), he earned a residency in General Surgery at Okmeydanı Training and Research Hospital. Upon completing his residency and becoming a specialist, his outstanding performance led to his appointment as the Assistant Chief Physician of the Oncology Department at Okmeydanı Training and Research Hospital for his mandatory specialist service.
Subsequently, he was appointed as an Academic Training Officer in the Department of General Surgery and Gastroenterology. He has played a pivotal role in the advancement of laparoscopic stomach and intestinal surgeries (such as sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, reflux, colon cancer, and gastric cancer) in Türkiye. Between 2002 and 2015, he trained dozens of residents, mentoring them to become qualified general surgeons.
In 2015, he transitioned from his post at Okmeydanı Hospital to Nişantaşı University, where he served as an Assistant Professor and faculty member.
Since 2017, Assoc. Prof. Ali Durmuş has continued his professional career as the director and lead surgeon at **Clinic Obesity**, an institution he founded himself.
